Essential to our mission is the provision of teacher training at the grassroots level. We do this in two ways:
At Prep, Grade 1 and 2, Bilum Books provides free teacher training to Districts and school clusters that buy our books.
Our books are easy to use. We run our training workshops to give teachers a sense of excitement and a level of confidence to use the books as soon as they get back to their classrooms.
Our practical workshop lessons demonstrate how to teach reading and writing, and the skills of English literacy (phonics, spelling and vocabulary, grammar and usage, and comprehension).
In workshops, teachers present their own lessons to the group to demonstrate what they have learned. In doing so, teachers gain the confidence to teach successfully in their own classrooms.
Our training workshops show teachers how the Bilum Books Teacher Guides help them to teach the NDoE Standards-Based ENGLISH Syllabus and how they can be used alongside the NDoE Teacher Guides.
Where in PNG? Bilum Books Teacher Training Workshops have taken us to schools throughout Papua New Guinea – from Kiunga to Kokopo, from Kairuku to Kitava. Click to see details about our Teacher Training Workshops and partnerships.
Our Teacher Guides are set out day-by-day, week-by-week, for each of the 4 terms of the PNG school year. They give daily scripted lessons on what to teach at each Grade level, and how to teach it. Especially for early grade teachers, our Teacher Guides give a teacher a professional development program for each day in the school year. No other company is producing these kinds of books.
Bilum Books Teacher Guides provide practical training in assessment and evaluation. Formative and Summative assessment activities enable teachers to assess their students against the Content Standards set out in the NDoE Standards-Based Syllabus.
The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted air travel. Unable to travel as freely as in previous years, we developed our Bilum Books Trainer Manual.
This manual is designed to help Trainers run a 3-day workshop for early grade teachers (Prep, One and Two). The workshop shows teachers how to use Bilum Books SBC English to implement the NDoE Standards-Based English Syllabus. It shows them how to teach their students to read and write.
‘This two day workshop has moulded and shaped me so that I can teach phonics and common words confidently in my classroom.’
‘I Ioved this workshop because it gives me ideas on how to use the Standard Based Curriculum.’
‘The two-day workshop gave clear and easy to understand explanations to teach phonics and common words. I am happy that I can now teach phonics lessons well in my school. LOVELY WORKSHOP!’
‘I use the Teacher Guide and Student Book, very simple and useful teaching resource that enhanced children’s learning in the classroom. I use it every day.’
Training videos are also available. The Covid-19 pandemic prompted us to develop a series of 24 training videos which can be used in workshops for early grade teachers using our SBC English for Papua New Guinea. Contact us for further information.
