Modern textbooks to teach high-level English to students in Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12.
PNG is changing. We need modern textbooks to teach our students high-level English skills. It is important for the future of Papua New Guinea. Studying English at a high level will give our students the communication skills and the ‘thinking skills’ that our nation needs.
These books set new standards for PNG. The PNG National Department of Education’s SBC English Syllabus has set the new standards our students
must achieve in reading, writing, speaking, listening, communication, grammar, and comprehension. These textbooks give you source material, exercises and discussion topics that will help your students to reach these standards.

These textbooks reproduce many of the classics of PNG literature, works that are not readily available to our students. Students leaving school should be aware of the literary heritage of our country – and be proud of it. The work of the late Nora Vagi Brash is one example. In the Grade 12 Student Textbook her play, ‘Taurama’, is studied in Units 1 & 2 and ‘Which Way, Big Man?’ is studied in Unit 11. Both plays are reproduced in full in the Readings section of the Textbook. Bilum Books is proud to be making these books available in this way.
Students will read and discuss stories, articles, brochures, media posts, books, poems.
Students will view films and participate in dramas.
Students will write paragraphs, letters, summaries, arguments, narratives, and creative pieces of writing.
Students will carry out research and present their findings.
These books have been written by Glenda Giles. Glenda hails from New Zealand, but she is a permanent resident of PNG. She now resides in Wewak, but
she has taught in PNG for more than 50 years. For
a time, Glenda was a School Inspector, and she
also established several new high schools: Koroba, Margarima, Green River and Tekin/Oksapmin. She is a superb English teacher. Her students consistently achieved high standards in the Grades 10 and 12 English national examinations. Hundreds of her ex- students now occupy influential positions in all aspects of life throughout PNG.
“To become good citizens of PNG, each of us must identify our place in our own culture and recognise the duties we have as citizens of our nation. As a result of their English studies, I hope that our students will become people of purpose, worthy sons and daughters of Papua New Guinea, who value national unity, and show tolerance and respect in their relationships with others.”

Inspiring words for the student
“The second part of the textbook focuses on culture. You are a child of your culture. The way you think, speak, try to solve problems and act
is influenced by the culture in which you have grown up. To understand how other people think and make decisions, we must understand the cultural context of their lives. The stories from PNG, Australia, Iran, Thailand, South Africa and Nigeria will help you to think globally about cultural issues.”
Glenda Giles – Grade 11 Foreword, p. xi
